What does housekeeping involve?

You clean guest rooms and bathrooms, put fresh linen on the beds, vacuum and mop floors and dust furniture. You take dirty laundry to the linen room.

You restock towels, toiletries and the minibar and tick off finished rooms on your list. In small hotels you sometimes also set the breakfast table or help guests with small requests.

What do I need?

There is no regulated training for room attendants. You learn what you need in the hotel. Cleanliness, order and good planning matter, so that rooms are ready before guests arrive.

The work is physically demanding. You are on your feet a lot, bend often and work with cleaning products. The AMS lists physical stamina and tolerance of dust as requirements.

How much does housekeeping pay?

The collective agreement lists housekeeping workers as an example of helpers. The amounts apply from 1 October 2026, gross, for 40 hours a week.

  • Less than 10 years in hotels and restaurants (pay group 5): €2,096.50, from the 6th year of service €2,148.90
  • At least 10 years in the industry (pay group 4): €2,153.00
  • Head of housekeeping as a wage earner (pay group 2): €2,440.00 in Tyrol, Salzburg, Vorarlberg and Carinthia; €2,328.00 in Styria
  • Part time: pay is calculated pro rata to your weekly hours

Do my years in other hotels count?

Yes. For the step from pay group 5 to 4, your experience in hotels and restaurants counts, not only in the same hotel. You prove it with references or work certificates. If you show them on your first working day, the higher pay group applies from the start.

Where are housekeeping jobs?

According to the AMS, employers are mainly hotels, guesthouses and spa resorts.

At the interview, ask how many rooms per shift are expected and who does the laundry.

How do I apply for housekeeping?

Say how many rooms you managed per shift and which hotels you have worked in. Experience in cleaning, laundry or household work counts too.

If your German is still basic, say so honestly and list your other languages. The AMS lists English for this job.

What do I need to sort out before I start?

Address registration, health insurance registration, staff rooms, the regions with the most guests and unemployment benefit between seasons are explained in our guide “Seasonal work in Austria”.
